Don’t get your Gmail account deleted – or multiple Gmail accounts for that matter.
John Jonas has created quite a stir over the last 24 hours with this blog post detailing how he had his Gmail account deleted (probably due to hackers). And lots of internet marketers have several free Gmail accounts.
He doesn’t state how strong his password was, or whether he was using the https version of Gmail at the time, but he suggests using Google docs on your own server. There are also lots of online secure backup options both in John’s post and some of the comments.
Here is how to get your Gmail account back if it is deleted in the future:
Keep a document of the username, password and DATE that you set up the Gmail account, and the last date you accessed your account, as you will need these to give to Google. Also make sure you have another email account you can access so they can send you a new link.
Then go to this URL and input all the information.
A few weeks ago I reported how important it is to prevent hackers from taking over your WordPress blog, but at the same time, I realized the passwords for all my email accounts could probably be a lot stronger too. So I changed them all.
I already knew about the https trick, so that your email is on a secure server. In Gmail, go to Settings > General > Browser Setting > “Always use https” but many still fail to do this.
But if you still feel you want more security, here is a blog post on how to run Google apps on your own server as John suggests.
UPDATE: Just got another email from John to say the topic of losing his Gmail account was sooo hot, his blog server went down! Looks like he scared a lot of internet marketers, eh?
